Follow Rwanda’s scenic southern and western route into one of Africa’s great montane forests. Track chimpanzees in Nyungwe, walk high above the forest on the canopy walkway, explore the cultural heritage of the south and finish with a restorative stay beside Lake Kivu.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Kigali

Meet your guide at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Explore selected city highlights if arrival time permits.

Day 2 Royal heritage route to Nyungwe

Drive south with visits to the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza and a selected cultural or historical site near Huye. Continue through tea-growing landscapes to the Nyungwe area.

Day 3 Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe

Set out early with ranger guides to track a habituated chimpanzee community. The afternoon is available for rest, birdwatching or a short guided nature activity.

Day 4 Canopy walkway and Lake Kivu

Return to the forest for a guided trail leading to Nyungwe’s canopy walkway. Later, drive towards Lake Kivu and check into your lakeside accommodation.

Day 5 Lake Kivu at leisure

Spend a relaxed day beside the lake, with optional boating, kayaking, walking or a locally hosted coffee experience depending on the chosen location.

Day 6 Return to Kigali

Travel back to Kigali through Rwanda’s western landscapes and transfer to your hotel or the airport for departure.

  • Chimpanzee sightings are not guaranteed; tracking can begin very early and involves uneven forest terrain.
  • The canopy walkway is reached by a forest trail and may not suit travellers with severe height concerns or limited mobility.
  • Lake activities and cultural visits will be selected according to the confirmed accommodation and operating schedule.
  • International flights, insurance, tips, personal expenses and activities not confirmed in writing are excluded.
