Enjoy Kigali and the misty Virunga highlands

Travel from Kigali to the volcanic highlands of northern Rwanda for two distinctive primate encounters. Trek to a habituated mountain gorilla family, then return to the bamboo forest in search of lively golden monkeys, with time to appreciate the scenery and communities around Volcanoes National Park.

Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Kigali

Arrive at Kigali International Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. If time allows, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial and enjoy a short orientation to the city.

Day 2 Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Complete any remaining Kigali visits, then drive north through Rwanda’s cultivated hills to the Musanze area. Settle into your lodge and receive a briefing for the following morning’s trek.

Day 3 Mountain gorilla trekking

Report to the park headquarters for allocation and briefing, then enter the forest with ranger guides to track a habituated mountain gorilla family. Return to the lodge for a restful afternoon or an optional community experience.

Day 4 Golden monkeys and return to Kigali

Track golden monkeys in the bamboo forest on a lively final morning. After the trek, return to Kigali for a hotel or airport drop-off, depending on your onward arrangements.

Gorilla and golden monkey permits are limited, non-transferable and subject to the booking conditions in force at confirmation.
Trekking duration and difficulty vary according to the primates’ location, terrain and weather.
Travellers should bring suitable hiking footwear, rain protection and a small daypack; porter services may be arranged locally.
International flights, insurance, tips, personal expenses and activities not confirmed in writing are excluded.
